For a team that has had little
to no success during its nearly 50 years of existence, the only World Series
appearance in 1982 would be its moment of glory. But the ’82 Brewers were more
than just World Series losers. They finished with a 95-67 record, one game
ahead of the Baltimore Orioles to win the American League East (the Brewers
were in the AL until the late 1990s). Milwaukee got off to a rather mediocre
start and manager Buck Rodgers was fired after only 47 games and replaced by
Harvey Kuenn. After the change, the Brewers charged from eight games behind and
had a lead of six games in late August and held off Baltimore to advance to the
ALCS. Against the California Angels, Milwaukee quickly fell behind two games to
none before rallying to win three straight to capture the AL Pennant and a trip
to the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. After taking a three games
to two lead, the Brewers lost Game 6 and 7 in St. Louis. The team was led
offensively by Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Gorman Thomas and Ben Oglivie. Their
pitching was anchored by starters Mike Caldwell and Pete Vuckovich and reliever
Rollie Fingers.
Best All-time Player:
Robin Yount
Yount is the Brewers’ all-time
franchise leader in games played (2856), runs scored (1632), hits (3142), total
bases (4730), doubles (583), triples (126) and RBIs (1426). He played his
entire 20-year career with Milwaukee and finished with a .285 batting average,
251 home runs and 271 stolen bases. Although he only made the All-Star Game
three times, he won the American League’s MVP Award twice (1982 and 1989), won
a Gold Glove (1982) and three Silver Slugger Awards. After coming into the
league as a shortstop, he successfully made the transition to centre field in
his early 30s and played the final nine years of his career in the outfield.
Best Player on the
Current Roster: Ryan Braun
PED accusations aside, Braun has
been the best player on the Brewers’ roster since he came into the league in
2007. He won the NL’s Rookie of the Year Award that year, and later won the NL
MVP in 2011. He is a six-time All-Star and has won five Silver Slugger Awards.
In 1354 career games, he has a .304 batting average, has hit 285 home runs, 937
RBIs and has stolen 181 bases.
