This Day In Baseball History: November 1, 2001

November 1, 2001

It was on this date in 2001, that for the first time in Major League Baseball history, a game begins in the month of November. One night after defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks in extra innings on a Derek Jeter home run, the Yankees attempt to take the lead in the World Series as the two teams play Game 5.
Much the same as the night, the D-Backs take a two-run lead into the bottom of the ninth and have closer Byung-Hyun Kim. With two out, Yankees’ third baseman, Scott Brosius, hits a game-tying two run homer (Tino Martinez had done the same the night before).
With the game still tied at two in the bottom of the 11th, Alfonso Soriano hit an opposite-field single to right, scoring Chuck Knoblauch, giving the Yankees a 3-2 win and a three games to two lead in the series.
