This Day In Baseball History: June 14, 1974

This seems rather impossible by today’s standards, but it was on this date in 1974 that California Angels starting pitcher Nolan Ryan threw an unbelievable 235 pitches in 13 innings in a game against the Boston Red Sox at Anaheim Stadium, a game the Halos won 4-3 in 15 innings.
In his 13 innings of work, Ryan yielded eight hits and ten walks, struck out 19 batters and allowed all three of Boston’s runs, including two in the top of the ninth that tied the game at three. The Angels would eventually win the game in the bottom of the fifteenth inning on a one-out double by Denny Doyle that scored Mickey Rivers.
Amazingly, Boston’s starting pitcher, Luis Tiant, pitched the complete game for the Red Sox, a total of 14 1/3 innings. For some reason, Tiant’s pitch count in that game was never recorded and it is still unknown to this day. He did, however, strike out five batters while yielding ten hits and four walks.
