This Day In Baseball
History: June 8, 1961
It was on this date in 1961 that
the Milwaukee Braves’ players Eddie Matthews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock and Frank
Thomas, became the first players in Major League Baseball history to hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back
home runs. The four players accomplished the four consecutive home runs in
Cincinnati’s Crossley Field.
Only 5,149 fans were in
attendance to see baseball history made, and most of them would have been in a
fairly good mood as their hometown Reds held a 10-2 lead heading into the top
of the seventh. Cincinnati starting pitcher, Jim Maloney, yielded a lead-off
single to Frank Boiling before Matthews connected for his home run. Aaron made
it back-to-back, cutting the lead to 10-5 and knocking Maloney from the game.
Marshall Bridges became the new
Reds’ pitcher and he promptly gave up home runs to Adcock and Thomas. The
Braves would add another run in the top of the eighth but despite the
history-making seventh, Milwaukee would still lose to Cincinnati by a score of
10-8.
