August 16, 1948
It was on this day in 1948, that
Hall of Famer Babe Ruth died of throat cancer at Memorial Hospital in New York
City, at the age of 53. The Babe changed the game of baseball forever with his
power hitting and became the most popular player in the game during his tenure
with the Yankees. He retired as the all-time home run king with 714, a record
that would last until April 8, 1974 when Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves would
pass him.
Ruth also retired with at .342
career batting average, good enough for ninth on the all-time list.
