This Day In Baseball History: October 16, 1962

October 16, 1962

It was on this date in 1962 that the New York Yankees defeated the San Francisco Giants 1-0 in Game 7 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, to win the World Series for the 20th time in the team’s history.
The Giants had the tying run on third base and the winning run on second base with two out when Giants’ slugger, Willie McCovey, hit what looked like a sure game winning hit to right field. But Yankee second baseman, Bobby Richardson, quickly moved to his left to grab the ball on the fly to record the final out.
The only run of the game was scored in the fifth inning when Yankee shortstop, Tony Kubek, grounded into a double play, allowing Bill Skowron to score.
The Yankees would not win another World Series for fifteen years.
