This Day In Baseball History: October 18, 1977

October 18, 1977

It was on this date in 1977, that Reggie Jackson hit three home runs on three consecutive pitches to lead the New York Yankees to an 8-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series. This was the 21st World Championship in the Yankees’ history and their first since 1962.
With his three home runs, Jackson ended the Series batting .450 (9 for 20), hit five home runs, drove in eight, scored ten himself, and was named the series’ Most Valuable Player. And it was his performance in the Sixth Game that earned him the nickname “Mr. October.”
The following season, 1978, the Yankees played in the World Series against the Dodgers, and won again. This time Jackson, furthered his reputation as a big-game player by batting .391, with two home runs and eight RBIs.
