This Day In Baseball History: October 4, 1906

October 4, 1906

It was on this date in 1906 that the Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh to win their 116th game of the season, a Major League record. The Cubs finished with a record of 116-36, winning the National League pennant by 20 games over the New York Giants. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to capture the World Series as they lost to their cross-town rivals, the Chicago White Sox four games to two.
The Cubs’ record of 116 wins has never been passed but the Seattle Mariners matched it in 2001. However the Cubs only played 152 games in 1906 (a winning percentage of .963) whereas the Mariners played 162 games (.716). Like the Cubs, the Mariners didn’t taste post season success either as they dropped the American League Championship Series to the New York Yankees in five games.
