This Day In Blue Jays' History: April 4, 1988

It was on this date in 1988 Toronto Blue Jays’ designated hitter, George Bell, became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit three home runs on Opening Day. I won’t go into much detail on this game as it will be featured later in the year in our Blue Jays’ Top 25 Games in Franchise History.

I will mention that the game was played at Kaufman Stadium (then known as Royals Stadium) in Kansas City and Toronto won the game by a score of 5-3. Also, only two other players have hit three homers on opening day since Bell accomplished the feat: Tuffy Rhodes with the Chicago Cubs in 1994, and Dmitri Young with the Detroit Tigers in 2005.
