This Day In Baseball
History: July 17, 1961
It was on this date in 1961 that
baseball legend Ty Cobb (at the time, baseball’s all-time hit king) died at the
age of 74 at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Despite the
personal demons that haunted him throughout his life, Cobb put together one of
the greatest—if not THE greatest—career in MLB history.
A brief summary of his stats
would see that Cobb played in 3034 games over 24 seasons, collected 4189 hits,
724 doubles, 295 triples, 117 home runs, 1933 RBIs, 897 stolen bases, and has
the highest career batting average in baseball history at .366.
He won 12 batting titles
(including nine straight from 1907 to 1915), but due to his downright nasty
personality, only won the AL’s MVP award once (1911).
