This Day In Baseball History: September 12, 1979

September 12, 1979

It was on this day in 1979 at Fenway Park, that Boston Red Sox first baseman, Carl Yastrzemski, singled off New York Yankees’ relief pitcher Jim Beattie to collect the 3000th hit of his career. The Red Sox would go on to defeat the Yankees in the game 9-2.
“Yaz” would play another four years with the Red Sox and finish his career with 3419 hits, which would be good enough for 8th on the all-time list when he retired. He would later be passed by Derek Jeter in 2012 and is now 9th on the list.
Yastrzemski would be inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1989. His career batting average was .285 and he hit 452 home runs, with 1844 RBIs and stole 168 bases.
