Today,
This Day In Baseball History will feature two ex-Toronto Blue Jays collecting
the 3000th hit of their careers. Although it happened in different
years, both players reached the milestone wearing the uniform of the Minnesota
Twins.
September 16, 1993
It was on this day in 1993 that
Minnesota Twins’ designated hitter, Dave Winfield, singled off of Oakland
Athletics’ closer Dennis Eckersley for the 3000th hit of his career.
The Twins would win the game by a score of 5-4 in eleven innings with Winfield
going 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. He would finish his career with
3110 hits and be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
September 16, 1996
It was on this day in 1996 that
Minnesota Twins’ designated hitter, Paul Molitor, tripled in the fifth inning
off of Kansas City Royals’ pitcher Jose Rosado to collect the 3000th
hit of his career. He becomes the first player in baseball history to reach the
milestone with a triple. Molitor would collect over 200 hits in 1996 becoming
the first player in history to collect 200 hits and reach the 3000 milestone
during the same season. He would end his career with 3319 hits, good enough for
ninth on the all-time list at the time of his retirement (Derek Jeter has since
moved into sixth place, bumping Molitor to tenth). The Twins would lose the
game to the Royals 6-5.
