This Day In Baseball History: September 5, 1914

September 5, 1914

It was on this day in 1914 that Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run—and the only minor league home run he would ever hit—while playing for the AAA Providence Grays against the Toronto Maple Leafs (yes, there was a baseball team in Toronto called the Maple Leafs.) Ruth was the starting pitcher for the Grays, tossing a 9-0 complete game shutout as well as hitting the home run. The game was played in Toronto, at Hanlan’s Point Stadium on Toronto Island, a short distance from where the Island Airport stands today.
