This Day In Baseball History: September 6, 1995

September 6, 1995

It was on this day in 1995 that the Baltimore Orioles’ Cal Ripken Jr replaced Lou Gehrig as baseball’s all-time iron man. In a 4-2 victory over the California Angels at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Ripken played in his 2131st consecutive game, breaking Gehrig’s old mark of 2130. Ripken was 2 for 4 in the game, including hitting his 15th home run of the season. Ripken would go on to play in 2632 consecutive games, a record that will probably stand forever. Since his retirement, Ripken has published a series of fictional baseball books written for kids. He also works for the TBS baseball crew as an in-game analyst.
He was inducted to the hall of fame in 2007.
